A scrapbook and diaristic compilation of original drawings, Raymond Pettibon’s bound, special edition artist book contains idiosyncratic and poetic musings on intimacy, sex, and human connection. Made on the occasion of the artist’s solo museum debut, held at the Renaissance Society in 1998, this special edition was made impromptu, and the gestural, almost automatic or stream-of-consciousness fragments of text and image reflect this spontaneous energy. While installing the exhibition, Pettibon produced 53 hand-annotated unique books, made to benefit the museum by drawing through the pages of the show’s accompanying monograph. The corresponding exhibition itself featured over 600 drawings, reflecting the artist’s intensely prolific nature and approach to image-making.
Raymond Pettibon (b. 1957; Tucson, AZ) lives and works in Los Angeles. Combining pictures and texts with varied references ranging from cartoons to art history to religious iconography–Blake, Goya, Gumby, Batman, and the Bible, among others–Pettibon consistently evades strict narrative. His works also frequently are characterized by a friction between meanings ascribed by popular consciousness, and individual subjectivity.
